A complete gear checklist for Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks

Nothing worse than finding out at 11,000 feet what you left in the car.

This is the full list — organized by layering system, broken down by month, and built around what actually keeps people warm, dry, and moving on a real Colorado summit day. Check items off as you pack; it saves your progress.

Before the list

The trailhead lies to you

It can be 65°F and sunny at the trailhead parking lot and below freezing with a 30 mph wind three hours later at the summit. Elevation and time of day change everything — which is exactly why a packing list needs to flex by month and by where you'll actually be standing.

3–4°F

Average temperature drop for every 1,000 feet of elevation you gain — a pleasant 60°F day in town is hovering near freezing at 14,000 feet.

20–30°F

How much colder a summit typically runs compared to the town at its base, even in the middle of summer.

15–35 mph

Typical sustained wind speed at exposed summits and ridgelines — enough to turn a mild temperature into a serious wind chill fast.

The layering system, in plain terms

Every serious mountain packing list comes down to four layers stacked for the job they do — not four items you own. Learn the jobs, and picking the right gear gets a lot simpler.

Layer 1

Base

Sits against your skin. Its only job is to move sweat away from your body. Merino wool or synthetic — never cotton, which holds moisture instead of moving it.

Layer 2

Mid

Traps the warm air your body generates. A fleece or lightweight softshell works for most days; this is the layer you add or shed most often on the move.

Layer 3

Insulation

Heavy warmth for when you stop moving — summit breaks, wind-exposed ridges, early starts in the dark. A packable down or synthetic puffy earns its weight here.

Layer 4

Shell

Blocks wind and water. A wind shell or softshell handles light precip and breathes well; a true hardshell rain jacket is non-negotiable insurance against a real storm.

Softshell / Wind Shell

  • Breathable — good for constant light wind and brief drizzle
  • Not fully waterproof — won't hold up in a real downpour
  • Lighter and more packable than a hardshell
  • Good default outer layer for most summer summit days

Hardshell (Rain Jacket)

  • Fully waterproof and windproof — built for real storms
  • Less breathable, so it comes off once the weather clears
  • The one item you carry "just in case" every single time
  • Mandatory by July and August, when afternoon storms are the norm, not the exception

What changes, month to month

This follows the same June-through-November climbing window most guided seasons run on. Your base kit above doesn't change — what you add on top of it does.

June

Summit range: roughly 25–40°F

Early summer, but many routes still carry lingering snowfields above 12,000 feet, especially in shaded gullies.

Add to your kitMicrospikes, gaiters, and warm gloves — snow travel is common, not rare.

July

Summit range: roughly 30–50°F

Peak summer warmth at the trailhead, but also the most reliable afternoon thunderstorms of the year.

Add to your kitA dedicated hardshell rain jacket and a true alpine-start mindset — off the summit before noon.

August

Summit range: roughly 30–50°F

Monsoon season continues. Warm, humid mornings at the trailhead can still turn into a lightning risk fast up high.

September

Summit range: roughly 20–40°F

Fall color and crisp air — historically one of the more stable weather windows of the season.

Footwear is where most mistakes happen

More summit-day misery comes from the wrong shoes than almost any other gear decision. Here's how to actually choose.

Trail Runners

  • Lighter, faster, less break-in time needed
  • Better for dry, Class 1–2 summer routes
  • Less ankle support and less protection on loose talus
  • Not ideal once real snow or scrambling enters the picture

Hiking Boots

  • More ankle support and underfoot protection
  • Better with a loaded pack or on rougher terrain
  • Warmer — matters for early starts and shoulder-season snow
  • Must be broken in well before summit day, never on it
  • Sock system matters as much as the shoe. Wool over a thin liner sock manages moisture and prevents blisters far better than a single cotton pair.
  • Gaiters earn their weight in June, October, and November, when snowfields and scree are both realistic.
  • Break everything in beforehand. New boots and a 14-mile day do not belong in the same sentence.

This is the backbone of mountain safety planning, adapted for a 14er day. Every item earns its place in your pack whether or not you ever need it.

  • NavigationAn offline map or GPS track of your route — cell service is unreliable to nonexistent above treeline.
  • SunSunscreen and SPF lip balm — UV exposure runs roughly 20% stronger at altitude than at sea level.
  • InsulationOne layer beyond what you're currently wearing, packed and ready, not assumed.
  • LightA headlamp with spare batteries — non-negotiable for the 3–5 a.m. alpine start most routes require.
  • First AidA basic kit — blister care, gauze, pain relief, any personal medication.
  • FireA lighter or waterproof matches, even on a route where you never plan to need them.
  • RepairA multi-tool and a few feet of tape — most gear failures are fixable in the field if you're carrying the right five ounces.
  • NutritionExtra food beyond what you planned to eat, in case the day runs longer than expected.
  • HydrationExtra water or a reliable way to treat more from a natural source.
  • ShelterA space blanket or bivy sack — weighs almost nothing and matters enormously if you're ever stuck out unexpectedly.

Common gear questions

  • BootsDo I need real mountaineering boots? Not for most standard summer routes — sturdy trail runners or mid-height boots handle Class 1–2 trails fine. Save mountaineering boots for early-season snow or routes requiring crampons.
  • PolesAre trekking poles necessary? Not mandatory, but they noticeably reduce knee strain on the descent and help with balance on loose talus.
  • CottonWhy avoid cotton? It holds moisture instead of wicking it away, so once it's wet it stays wet and pulls heat from your body — a real risk even in summer once wind picks up.
  • Pack sizeWhat size backpack do I need? A 20–35 liter daypack covers nearly every standard route without adding unnecessary weight.
  • Snow gearDo I need snow gear in July or August? Possibly — shaded gullies and couloirs can hold snow into midsummer. Check recent trip reports before ruling out traction devices.

This is the same list I run through before every climb — built from years of getting it wrong before I got it right. The goal is simple: nobody should turn back or have a miserable summit day because of something they could have packed.
